You pull up on your street after a long day. Your EV is on 12%. The nearest public charger is a 15-minute walk away, and the last time you used it, someone had parked a diesel Mondeo in front of it. Sound familiar?
That's the daily reality for a huge chunk of Irish EV drivers, particularly the ones who don't have a driveway. The home charging divide is real, and it's costing people both money and patience. But a city in central Europe has been quietly road-testing a solution that's elegant, cheap, and already working. And it involves something we have on every single street in the country.
Lamp posts. Ordinary, already-paid-for, already-wired-up lamp posts.
What Prague Actually Did
Prague's municipal authority partnered with a charging infrastructure company to retrofit existing street lamps with low-power EV charging units. The kit attaches directly to the lamp post's existing electrical connection. No digging. No laying new cable runs. No six-month planning permission saga. The chargers deliver around 3.7kW to 7.4kW, which is perfectly adequate for overnight charging. Park up in the evening, plug in, wake up to a full battery.
The cost per unit is a fraction of installing a dedicated standalone charger. Where a purpose-built public fast charger can run to tens of thousands of euro once you factor in groundworks, equipment, and connection fees, lamp post retrofits have come in at roughly a few hundred to low thousands per unit in various European pilots. Scale matters here. Prague isn't rolling out a handful. The plan covers thousands of lamps across the city, turning the entire street network into a de facto charging grid.
It's not just Prague either. Councils in the UK, particularly in London and Oxford, have been running similar schemes for several years now. The technology is proven. The demand is there. The lamps are already there.
Why This Matters Specifically for Ireland
Ireland's EV charging rollout has been, to put it charitably, uneven. The motorways have gotten better. Rural towns and urban residential streets are a different story. The RSA and SEAI have pushed targets, funding has been announced repeatedly, and yet if you live in a terrace in Cork or a housing estate in Drogheda, your options for charging without a home wallbox are still limited and often unreliable.
The fundamental problem is infrastructure economics. Building new charging hubs requires grid capacity upgrades, site acquisition, civil works, and ongoing maintenance contracts. All of that costs serious money and takes serious time. Meanwhile, the lamp post outside your house already has power running through it. It's already connected to the grid. It's already maintained by the local council.
The retrofit model flips the economics. Instead of asking "where do we build new infrastructure," you ask "what infrastructure already exists that we can repurpose." That's a question every Irish city and town can answer immediately, because the lamp posts are everywhere.
The Practical Realities (and the Catches)
Nothing is entirely without complication. A few things worth knowing before anyone starts expecting this to appear outside their gaff next Tuesday.
Power capacity is the first question. Not every lamp post circuit is set up to handle the additional load of an EV charger, especially if there are multiple units on the same line. Any rollout needs an audit first. That's doable, but it's not instant.
Speed is modest. These are slower chargers. A 7kW unit will fully charge most EVs overnight, which is fine if you're a commuter who parks for eight hours. It's useless if you're trying to top up for a long run in 20 minutes. This is destination charging, not rapid charging. The two solve different problems.
Cable management is real. Someone has to get the cable from the post to their car without it becoming a trip hazard on the footpath. Some systems use short, semi-recessed cables or in-ground conduits. It's solvable but needs thought, especially on narrow footpaths where your man with the pram is already negotiating wheelie bins.
Billing needs to work. The Prague system uses an app and a pay-per-use model. That's fine in principle but it needs to be simple. One more app, one more account, one more RFID card and Irish drivers will park beside the charger and not bother using it.
What Irish Councils Could Do Right Now
This doesn't require a national programme or a ministerial announcement to get started. Local authorities have the power to run pilot schemes. A single Dublin district, a Galway street, a residential road in Limerick with no driveways. Twenty lamp posts, twenty charging units, a simple payment system. Run it for 12 months. Measure usage. Publish the data.
That's how Prague did it. Pilot, prove, scale.
The funding mechanisms exist too. SEAI has grant programmes. EU structural funds have been used for exactly this kind of urban mobility infrastructure across member states. Ireland is not short of avenues here, it's short of someone deciding to walk down one.
The EV scrappage scheme is nudging more people toward electric. Affordable new EVs are arriving in volume. The demand side of Irish EV adoption is accelerating. The supply side, meaning the places you can actually charge, is the thing still lagging behind.
The Bigger Picture
Street lamp charging won't solve everything. You still need rapid chargers on motorways and at retail parks for longer journeys. You still need workplace charging. You still need the grid investment that underpins all of it.
But for the hundreds of thousands of Irish people who live in terraced houses, apartments, or older estates with no off-street parking, the lamp post model could be the thing that actually makes EV ownership viable. Not aspirational. Viable.
Prague figured that out. The lamp posts are already there. They're on every street in every Irish town. They just need someone here to ask the obvious question.
